Into the Gameplay

Troubleshoot is a 2D top down endless shooter and is one of my first experiences making a 2 dimensional shoot'em up game and with the added crunch of a 2 day deadline, made it all worth while.

This was my first game jam and I managed to get it done with 2 other programmers and 1 artist, I was responsible for the gameplay and enemy behavior which is made to spawn, find the player and track it down.

The Experience

This was an incredibly fun and engaging experience. It was great to see people from the programming industry play our game and have fun while doing it. This was something that I was incredibly proud of as people commented on how great the enemies and eventually the boss felt great to play against and provided a fair challenge.

Learning

I learned quite a bit from this experience. Initially, we tried to have multiple movement types for different enemies (Some enemies move up and down, others track the player and some move from side to side)

But when we got into development we realized quickly that often times the game would feel too overwhelming for the player and the time it took to play test and iterate was taking too much time so we ended up only going with the enemies that track the player.
